Fazl Ali College observed its 64th Foundation Day on 08 September at FAC Auditorium by organising a formal programme to commemorate the day.
Dr. Lanurenla, Associate Professor & Head of the Department of English, gave an overview of the humble beginnings of the college in celebration of the day. She spoke about the vision for education that began before Nagaland was a state. Leaders like R.C. Chiten, R. Ngullie, Rev. Subongmeiba, Imnaonen, Supongnuklu, Mayangnokcha, Imlong Chang, Dr. Longri Ao, Khelhoshe Sema and a few others, along with then DC, Major Khating, sought the necessity of an educational institution, owing to which a donation drive began that resulted in 50 paise contributions from households that amounted to Rs. 30,000.
She emphasised how the setup of this initial night college was not a single man's vision but the collaborative power of the people in Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto. The passion that Sir Fazl Ali, the then Governor of Assam, had for the Nagas was highlighted in his contribution of Rs. 50,000. The college began with 43 students, 5 subjects, and 3 teachers, including the principal, as recorded in the first foundation day speech given by Mr. P.M. Sarwar, the first principal of the college.
With personal anecdotes of her own experiences as a Fazl Ali College alumna, Dr. Lanurenla concluded with a tribute to the pioneers, leaders, and principals who have taken the college thus far, and a prayer for the young, dynamic principal, Dr. I. Wati Imchen. She encouraged the students with a question, "What can you do for your alma mater?" in the hopes of an unending legacy for the college.
